Planning Before Installing a Security Camera

The most essential part of installing a security camera system is selecting the best places for mounting the surveillance system to minimize cable length and maximize camera coverage. Place indoor cameras at the corner of a room because that’s where most of the access points to the room are visible. The power adapter should also be situated nearby.

Outdoor cameras should be placed in high places covering the garage, windows, and doors. Select spots over 10 feet so that it can’t be knocked to the ground easily.

Camera Positioning and Angle

When installing your home security camera system, you must consider the surveillance system’s distance from its subject. All the right places should be easily visible and centered at all times. Do not mount the camera where it can be blurred by glare – this implies that your security surveillance system should not face direct sunshine since too much sunlight limits visibility.

Unless you have a round camera, camera security systems should be mounted, pointing downwards. If you install your security camera system on a structure or a wall, screw it in place firmly so it won’t shake and distort the footage.

Placing the Digital Video Recorder

The DVR of the surveillance system is where the hard disk is located. Therefore, all the surveillance footage is stored in the DVR. It is highly advisable to place the DVR in a locked partition so that even when an invader sees the DVR, they can’t damage the recorded footage. This is a crucial step in beefing up the security of your house.

Running the Cables

When installing home security camera systems, you have to consider how the camera cables will run throughout your house. In most scenarios, the camera cables will simply run through your ceiling and into a structure or wall.

Protecting the Wiring

Security camera wiring should be protected against heat, water, corrosion, and other elements that can cause damage after a long period. They should also be safeguarded from vandals and intruders who may tamper with the wires.

Some of the protective measures you can employ are covering the wiring with raceways or sheaths, painting the wires to match with the surroundings, and running wires inside baseboards, ceilings, and walls.

Connecting the Cables

The video wire is attached via the BNC port. Remove approximately 2 cm of the outer cover of the video cord, which will reveal the braids. Slip right the crimping barrel onto the cord with a larger diameter facing the end of the wire. Now detach the white insulator that protects the innermost wire. Now put the uncovered wires into the BNC port and screw the crimping barrel firmly.

Connect the output DVR port to the monitor where you want to view the video footage.

Turn on the System

Begin by turning on the cameras, followed by the DVR and the monitor. Set up the DVR as per the user guide that comes with the DVR. Go through each camera’s video feed to ensure that each camera functions correctly and has the optimal viewing angle.
